Evidently, we do.

The University of North Texas Press, probably the most prolific publisher of Texas Rangers biographies and anthologies, has published a new one-volume history, Texas Rangers: Lives, Legend, and Legacy by Bob Alexander and Donaly E. Brice ($34.95 hardcover).

The 672-page tome certainly feels like a thorough account of the Rangers from their founding in 1823 to the present day and may seem a bit formidable to the average reader or below-average weightlifter. But of the 672 pages, roughly 120 are devoted to photos, 105 to notes, 28 to an extensive bibliography, 24 to index, and 22 to front matter (contents page, preface, etc.). So that leaves about 370 pages or so of text, which isn’t quite so intimidating. Nor all that comprehensive compared to Mike Cox’s or Robert Utley’s more riveting two-volume Ranger histories.

The authors divide their well-researched one-volume history into four sections — the early years (120 pages including pictures), the frontier battalion (206 pages), the legend and the legacy (120 pages), and modern-day Rangers (58 pages, but just 22 pages of text). The section on the frontier battalion includes the initial rosters of all six companies, no doubt grist for genealogy enthusiasts.

Now in paperback: Texas Ranger: The Epic Life of Frank Hamer, the Man Who Killed Bonnie and Clyde by John Boessenecker is now available in a 520-page trade paperback edition (St. Martin’s, $19.99). The author portrays Hamer as “the greatest American lawman of the twentieth century,” but he does deal with Hamer’s shortcomings as well as his many successes.

The book was published in hardcover last year and received high praise from respected Texas Ranger historians and biographers Mike Cox, Stephen L. Moore, James Reasoner, and Robert M. Utley.

Texas icons: I’m happy to report that Donna Ingham’s book on 50 Texas icons is back in print with a new title, Texas Bigger and Brighter: 50 Iconic Lone Star People, Places, and Things(Lone Star Books, $16.95 hardcover).

The book, with color photographs by Paul Porter, offers a readable, concise overview of Texas culture, covering such icons as the Alamo, armadillos, barbecue, Big Bend, Buddy Holly, Dr Pepper, LBJ, oil wells, pickup trucks, Tex-Mex, and wildflowers — presented in alphabetical order.
