LUBBOCK \u2014 It\u2019s probably safe to say that never before in Lubbock\u2019s 100 year\u2013plus history<\/span> has such an illustrious slate of Texas-related authors gathered here on the same day to discuss and sign their books.<\/p>\n

As part of the 20th anniversary celebration of LHUCA, Lubbock\u2019s esteemed Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts, the literary arts will be the focus of the city\u2019s first-ever full-day book festival, Sat., Oct. 28, 2017.\u00a0 Thirty-six featured authors, plus several others serving as moderators and more than a dozen local authors on hand to sign their books, will participate. Sessions cover literary genres from fiction to poetry to history and more, and appeal to diverse readers of all ages. <\/span><\/span>In addition, the city will name its 2017\u201318 Lubbock Poet Laureate, award-winning poet William Wenthe<\/span> of the Texas Tech University faculty, on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. in LHUCA\u2019s Firehouse Theatre.<\/p>\n

All official Festival events will take place in venues at LHUCA and CASP in Lubbock\u2019s downtown Cultural District. LHUCA is located at 511 Avenue K, Lubbock, TX 79401. CASP\u2019s Printmaking Studio and 5& J Gallery are located at 1106 Fifth Street, Lubbock, TX 79401.<\/p>\n

Preceding the Saturday events will be a free Thursday evening reading in the 2017\u201318 Texas Tech University Creative Writing Program Reading Series, by novelist and essayist Alexander Chee<\/span> (The Queen of the Night; How to Write an Autobiographical Novel<\/span>), in LHUCA\u2019s Firehouse Theatre at 7:00 p.m., and on Friday evening, the annual Literary Lubbock fundraising gala hosted by Texas Tech University Press. In addition, on Friday, evening at 7:00 p.m., the LHUCA Literary Showcase, in collaboration with TTU\u2019s Creative Writing Program, will host free readings by poet Laura Van Prooyen<\/span>, along with undergraduate reader Lance Evangelister<\/span> and graduate reader Nancy Dinan<\/span>, in LHUCA\u2019s Firehouse Theatre.<\/p>\n

Festival keynoters include S. C. Gwynne<\/span> of Austin, author of the nonfiction bestsellers Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches<\/span> and Rebel Yell: The Violence, Passion, and Redemption of Stonewall Jackson. <\/span>Most recently, Gwynne explores how the passing game revolutionized Texas\u2019 most popular sport in The Perfect Pass: American Genius and the Reinvention of Football\u200e,<\/span> including a nod to the innovations of Mike Leach, <\/span>former Texas Tech University head coach.<\/p>\n

Numerous regional and national bestselling authors will give solo readings and talks, or participate in multi-author panels. Jodi Thomas of Canyon, distinguished Texas Tech alumna and a member of the National Romance Writers Hall of Fame, will discuss her Ransom Canyon series of novels, and John R. Erickson<\/span> of Perryton, creator of the beloved Hank the Cowdog series for young readers, will present a program on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n

In addition, newcomer to the book scene Karin McCay,<\/span> news co-anchor of Lubbock\u2019s KCBD-TV, will read from her Magic Mommy series of titles for children.<\/p>\n

From 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in LHUCA\u2019s Christine DeVitt Icehouse, celebrity chef Ad\u00e1n Medrano<\/span> of Houston, author of the cookbook Truly Texas Mexican: A Native Culinary Heritage in Recipes,<\/span> and Lubbock Avalanche-Journal<\/span> food columnist Angelina LaRue<\/span> from Idalou, author of The Whole Enchilada: Fresh and Nutritious Southwestern Cuisine,<\/span> will team up for a festive Southwest-themed luncheon and cooking demonstration. Tickets are $30.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>Fans can also look forward to appearances by writers Terry Jennings<\/span> of Waco \u2014 son of the late musician Waylon Jennings and author of the heartfelt memoir\/biography Waylon: Tales of My Outlaw Dad;<\/span> Texas Tech alum Rachel Caine <\/span>of Fort Worth, author of The Great Library series and other fiction for adults and young adults; and Patrick Dearen<\/span> of Midland, author of numerous Western fiction and nonfiction titles and most recently a Western Writers of America Spur Award winner for The Big Drift<\/span> and multi-award finalist for Dead Man\u2019s Boot.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other favorite authors with nonfiction topics are former Texas Tech All-Conference football standout R. Gaines Baty of Dallas (Champion of the Barrio: The Legacy of Coach Buryl Baty); Harvey Girl descendant and former bookstore owner Rosa Walston Latimer of Post (Harvey Houses of Texas and similar histories of Harvey Houses in other states); and Frank Sikes of Lubbock (West Texas Middleweight: The Story of LaVern Roach).<\/p>\n

Novelists reading and discussing their books include James R. Dennis and John Davis of San Antonio (two-thirds of the team writing as Miles Arceneaux) with their mystery series set on the Texas coast; bestselling romance author Linda Broday of Amarillo (Men of Legend series); Texas Tech alum and Dallas-area resident Melissa Lenhardt with her Western historical novels Sawbones, Blood Oath, and Badlands; and Timothy Lewis of Canyon (Forever Friday).<\/p>\n

Amarillo author A. G. Howard\u2019s Splintered series and other works cater to young adult audiences, while San Antonio graphic novelist Xavier Garza\u2019s books (Maximilian and the Lucha Libre Club and The Donkey Lady Fights La Llorona and Other Stories) will also appeal to younger readers. Lubbock author S. J. Dahlstrom\u2019s four Wilder Good novels have been hits with middle-grades audiences. Also for middle graders, Texas Tech engineering professor Michelle Pantoya will present a hands-on activity drawn from her recent Designing Dandelions: An Engineering Everything Adventure.<\/p>\n

Children will also enjoy presentations by Tim A. McKenzie (Baxter Barret Brown\u2019s Bass Fiddle) and Dolores Mosser (A Train Story, selected by LeVar Burton as a Reading Rainbow feature), both of Lubbock.<\/p>\n

Readers of poetry will be treated to a session by Laura Van Prooyen of San Antonio, author of the prize-winning Our House Was on Fire, and Scott Wiggerman of Albuquerque, N.M., author of Leaf and Beak: Sonnets and coeditor of anthologies including, most recently, Bearing the Mask: Southwestern Persona Poems.<\/p>\n

Poetry is among the genres featured in sessions throughout the day by Texas Tech faculty authors Curtis Bauer (The Real Cause for Your Absence, poetry); Kurt Caswell (Getting to Grey Owl: Journeys on Four Continents, essays, and coeditor of To Everything on Earth: New Writing on Fate, Community, and Nature, essays); Katie Cortese (Girl Power and Other Short-Short Stories, fiction); D. Gilson (I Will Say This Exactly One Time: Essays); Jacqueline Kolosov (Memory of Blue, poetry, and Paris, Modigliani & Me, young adult fiction); John Poch (Fix Quiet, poetry), and Diane Hueter Warner (coeditor of To Everything on Earth: New Writing on Fate, Community, and Nature, essays).<\/p>\n

Writers from Texas Tech\u2019s creative writing graduate program Jasmine Bailey Epstein, Chen Chen, Scott Morris, and Katie Simonian will read on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Also on Saturday afternoon, several authors of recent Texas Tech University Press titles will discuss their nonfiction books: Nancy Draves of San Antonio (A Promise Fulfilled: The Kitty Anderson Diary and Civil War Texas, 1861); Bob Horton of Lubbock (Of Bulletins and Booze: A Newsman\u2019s Story of Recovery); Ruben Molina of Los Angeles, Calif. (Chicano Soul: Recordings and History of an American Culture, 10th Anniversary Edition); and Janet M. Neugebauer of Lubbock (A Witness to History: George H. Mahon, West Texas Congressman) \u2014 all of whom are also featured at the Literary Lubbock fund-raising gala dinner at the Croslin Room on the Texas Tech campus, Fri., Oct. 27, from 6 to 9 p.m. (Tickets for Literary Lubbock are available through Oct. 20 at http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/843946032423348.)<\/p>\n

Signing their books in hourly stints in LHUCA\u2019s Main Gallery from 10 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. are Lubbock-area authors Thom Vines (historical fiction) and Thomas J. Nichols (Voices from the Fog); Sue Swinson (Silly Willie Pig and other children\u2019s picture books) and Krystal Granzow (Maddy Lou and Mack at the State Fair of Texas, children\u2019s); Vaun Murphrey (Chimera, sci-fi\/teen) and Melody Robinette (The Halo Series, teen); Alan Burton (Squib-Kick It to a Fat Guy\u2026and 699 More Memorable Quotes from the Playbook of Coach Mike Leach); Teddy Jones (Nowhere Near: Short Stories); Maria Hoagland (Cobble Creek romance series); K. J. Waters (Shattering Time, fiction) and Chad Cartwright (Shock, fiction); and Kim Hunt Harris (The Trailer Park Princess series, women\u2019s contemporary fiction,) and Kay Ellington & Barbara Brannon (The Paragraph Ranch series, West Texas fiction, and Literary Texas, nonfiction\/travel).<\/p>\n

Additional activities include coffee and pastries, with welcome remarks by LHUCA director Jean Caslin and Lubbock mayor pro tem Latrelle Joy from 9:30 to 9:45 a.m. in LHUCA\u2019s Main Gallery; a printmaking demonstration in the CASP\/5&J Printmaking Studio by Curtis Bauer of Q Ave. Press from 10 to 10:45 a.m.; and a box lunch in the Studio Gallery at 11:30 ($11.50 or $12.50; available by advance reservation until October 20).<\/p>\n

Exhibitors in the Main Gallery include Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Dos Gatos Press, Iron Horse Literary Review, Texas Tech University Creative Writing Program, and Texas Tech University Press.<\/p>\n

All book sales except John R. Erickson\u2019s will be handled by Barnes & Noble Booksellers in the LHUCA Main Gallery. Erickson will sign his Hank the Cowdog books in the LHUCA Graffiti Building following his session.<\/p>\n

All events except the cookbook luncheon are free and open to the public. Admission tickets (free) are required for the John R. Erickson and S. C. Gwynne sessions, due to limited space.<\/p>\n

ABOUT THE LOUISE HOPKINS UNDERWOOD CENTER FOR THE ARTS\u00a0\u00a0 Known locally as LHUCA (pronounced Luca), the center was founded in 1997 through the leadership of Louise Hopkins Underwood, a longtime Lubbock patron of the arts. The center\u2019s galleries and performance spaces host a busy schedule of film screenings, exhibitions, concerts, literary readings and dance performances. The Lubbock Book Festival is in keeping with a quote from George Washington, appropriately lettered above the door of LHUCA\u2019s southeast entrance: \u201cTo encourage literature and art is the duty that every good citizen owes to his country.\u201d<\/p>\n

McAllen Book Festival to feature eighteen authors in fourth year, Nov. 11<\/h1>\n

McALLEN \u2014 Benjamin Alire S\u00e1enz, the winner of the PEN\/Faulkner Award and the American Book Award, <\/span>will be among 18 authors at the Fourth Annual McAllen Book Festival to be held Saturday, Nov. 11 at the McAllen Public Library, 4001 N. 23rd.<\/p>\n

A free event sponsored by the McAllen Public Library the festival will also feature Rachel Caine,<\/span> a multiple New York Times<\/span> bestselling author of books in a wide variety of genres, including thriller, mystery, paranormal romance, urban fantasy, science fiction, and young adult. She has published more than fifty novels to date. Her notable series are Stillhouse Lake<\/span> (thriller), The Great Library<\/span> (young adult), Morganville Vampires<\/span> (young adult), and Weather Warden<\/span> (urban fantasy).<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span>Other authors include Xavier Garza,<\/span> author, artist, teacher, and storyteller whose work is a lively documentation of life, dreams, superstitions, and heroes in the larger-than-life world of South Texas. Ashley Hope Perez,<\/span> author of the award-winning historical fiction for young adults, Out of Darkness, <\/span>also joins a diverse group of author who will appeal to children, young adults and parents.<\/p>\n

The McAllen Book Festival will also have music, storytelling, hot dogs, lemonade and more\u2014all at the McAllen Public Library.<\/p>\n

McAllen\u2019s Main Library is a reclaimed former Walmart big box store. Opened in December 2011, it is the largest single-floor library in the United States, occupying 125,000 square feet, or two and a half times the area of a standard U.S. football field.<\/p>\n

The design, by Meyer Scherer & Rockcastle Ltd. of Minneapolis, won the International Interior Design Association 2012 Library Interior Design Competition. In 2013, the design also won the Honor Award for Interior Architecture, which is the highest honor for interior design awarded by the American Institute of Architects. In July 2016, McAllen\u2019s Main Library was chosen as the most beautiful library in Texas by tech, science, innovation and culture digital publication Tech Insider.<\/p>\n

Presented by George West Storyfest Association, Inc.,<\/span> the annual Dobie Dichos event honors Live Oak County\u2019s most famous son, author <\/span>J. This year, the Dobie Dichos evening is slated for Sun., Nov. 3, 2017, from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $5.00\u2013$15.00 per person.<\/p>\n
