I\u2019m sure it was a popular Christmas gift for sisters everywhere.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u346384-25\">The Bush sisters are 35 now, and they reflect on growing up in a loving family and in the public eye with Secret Service agents just a few steps away.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u346384-28\">Many of the stories are humorous, even if they might not have seemed so at the time, while others are poignant. Throughout the book, the sisters praise their parents and grandparents for always letting them know they were loved, even when they found themselves in the media spotlight for something they had done.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u346384-31\">On one such occasion, when they were busted in Austin for underage drinking, Jenna called and woke up the President.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u346384-34\">\u201cAs I began saying how sorry I was,\u201d Jenna writes, \u201che interrupted and said, \u2018No, I\u2019m sorry. We promised you normalcy, and this is not normal.\u2019<\/p>\n<p id=\"u346384-37\">\u201cMy parents did make it clear that they weren\u2019t thrilled with our behavior, but I\u2019m sure they also recognized that another type of punishment was about to descend. Barbara\u2019s and my faces were suddenly everywhere, and the words accompanying them were almost universally negative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"u346384-40\">Barbara and Jenna were named for their grandmothers. Having the same name as the First Lady would create problems sometimes for young Barbara.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u346384-43\">\u201cI was constantly hung up on,\u201d she writes, \u201cwhether I was ordering pizza from Domino\u2019s, school supplies from a catalog, Girl Scout cookies, or books from the shiny Scholastic flyers we brought home from school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"u346384-46\">Later, it would occur to her to make reservations and sometimes introduce herself under a different name, such as Barbara Catswith (\u201cbecause I love cats\u201d).<\/p>\n<p id=\"u346384-49\">\u201cBut I do love my name,\u201d she quickly adds. \u201cAs a girl, I was told it meant \u2018beautiful stranger.\u2019 I\u2019ll take it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"u346384-54\">Jenna is again in the media spotlight, but now as a correspondent on NBC\u2019s <span id=\"u346384-52\">Today Show.<\/span> She is married and has two daughters. Barbara is the co-founder and CEO of Global Health Corps, which encourages young leaders to address health challenges around the world.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u346384-59\">\u201c<span id=\"u346384-57\">Sisters First<\/span>,\u201d they conclude, \u201cisn\u2019t a typical memoir, but rather a love story we wrote to each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"u346384-62\">It\u2019s a good read, garnering mostly five-star reviews from readers online.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u346384-65\">* * * * *<\/p>\n<p id=\"u346384-72\"><span id=\"u346384-67\">Glenn Dromgoole<\/span> has been writing his Texas Reads column since 2002, focusing on Texas books and authors.
