Along the way they encounter drug cartels, smugglers, crooked politicians, pirates and sea slaves.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u348049-32\">As always, the Arceneaux team (<span>Brent Douglass, John T. Davis, <\/span>and <span>James R. Dennis<\/span>) keeps the action flowing and the pages turning, with a couple of surprising twists at the end. This may be the best yet.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u348049-41\"><span>George Washington:<\/span> Abilene author <span>Rob Westman<\/span> and Abilene artist <span>Kay Walton<\/span> have teamed up to produce a full-color coffee table book on George Washington\u2019s Christian faith and values.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u348049-46\"><span>George Washington: Providence<\/span> ($24.95 hardcover) makes its debut appropriately on Presidents Day, at a 7 p.m. event Monday at the Paramount Theatre in downtown Abilene.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u348049-52\"><span>Dr. Peter Lillback,<\/span> author of the number one best-seller <span>George Washington\u2019s Sacred Fire,<\/span> will speak, and Westman and Walton will sign books. Westman said he was inspired to write his book, and produce a one-hour documentary, after reading Lillback\u2019s thoroughly researched account several years ago. Lillback helped Westman secure funding for his and Walton\u2019s family-oriented volume.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u348049-55\">\u201cIf George Washington is our measure,\u201d Westman writes, \u201cthen God seems less interested in bravado and more interested in bravery. He was not a perfect man. But we can learn from his actions, as he attempted to walk according to the duties of the Christian faith.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"u348049-67\"><span><span id=\"u348659\"><a href=\"https:\/\/untpress.unt.edu\/catalog\/3788\" id=\"u348651\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"readableLinkWithLargeImage\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"readableLargeImageContainer float\"><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/description\/parsons%2c%20captain%20jack%20helm_cover%20sm.jpg\"  id=\"u348651_img\" \/><\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/span><\/span><span>Reconstruction violence:<\/span> Veteran Texas author <span>Chuck Parsons<\/span> has written an authoritative biography, <span><a href=\"https:\/\/untpress.unt.edu\/catalog\/3788\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Captain Jack Helm: A Victim of Texas Reconstruction Violence<\/span><\/a><\/span> (University of North Texas Press, $29.95 hardcover).<\/p>\n<p id=\"u348049-70\">Helm was a deputy sheriff, sheriff, and captain of the Texas State Police during Reconstruction. Often the suspected lawbreakers that he arrested never made it back to jail alive, and eventually his version of law and order brought about his own demise at the hands of notorious killer John Wesley Hardin. Little has been written about Helms until this book.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u348049-75\">Texas State Historian <span>Bill O\u2019Neal<\/span> says, \u201cA biography of Jack Helm is long overdue. Captain Jack Helm is more than a fine gunfighter biography: it is a vivid statement about the murderous violence of Reconstruction in Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"u348049-87\"><span><span id=\"u348672\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Entrepreneurial-Spirit-Aggieland-Success-Students\/dp\/1457554623\" id=\"u348664\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"readableLinkWithLargeImage\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"readableLargeImageContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/description\/burson%2c%20the%20entrepreneurial%20spirt%20of%20aggieland_cover%20sm.jpg\"  id=\"u348664_img\" \/><\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/span><\/span><span>Business successes:<\/span> <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Entrepreneurial-Spirit-Aggieland-Success-Students\/dp\/1457554623\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>The Entrepreneurial Spirit of Aggieland<\/span><\/a><\/span> by <span>Randy Burson<\/span> ($34.99 oversized hardcover, $24.99 paperback) focuses on 12 Aggies who have succeeded while pursuing their dreams of launching their own business enterprises. The twelve stories are told in first person as the entrepreneurs relate their paths to success, the challenges they had to overcome, and their advice to young, aspiring business leaders.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u348049-90\">\u201cThere is no secret recipe for success,\u201d Burson writes. \u201cEntrepreneurial success is about courage, self-discipline, vision, belief, capitalizing on opportunities, overcoming obstacles and, most of all, hard work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"u348049-93\">* * * * *<\/p>\n<p id=\"u348049-100\"><span id=\"u348049-95\">Glenn Dromgoole<\/span> has been writing his Texas Reads column since 2002, focusing on Texas books and authors.
