Hank, influenced by his wise Uncle Edward, experiences the presence of evil and redeeming spirits early on. These supernatural forces continue to appear and collide throughout his life as a courageous and decorated soldier in the Philippines and Mexico, as a successful and honorable insurance investigator, and as a devoted and loving husband and father.

Along the way, Hank experiences great heights of joy and almost unbearable depths of sadness, and finally a sense of redemption and hope.

The novel deals with historical events such as the Moro War, Pancho Villa and other border bandits, the Porvenir massacre, and the Great Depression, but Hank Hambledon himself and his family’s ranch are fictitious.

Willeford said he believes The Company Man, his debut novel, should have particular appeal to young Christian men as well as readers who like historical fiction set in Texas.

* * * * *

Glenn Dromgoole has been writing his Texas Reads column since 2002, focusing on Texas books and authors.
