{"id":1325,"date":"2018-12-31T16:43:49","date_gmt":"2018-12-31T16:43:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress.etypegoogle10.com\/?p=1325"},"modified":"2018-12-31T16:43:49","modified_gmt":"2018-12-31T16:43:49","slug":"glenn-dromgooles-texas-reads-column-appears-weekly-at-lonestarliterary-com-93","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.etypegoogle10.com\/?p=1325","title":{"rendered":"Glenn Dromgoole&#8217;s Texas Reads column appears weekly at LoneStarLiterary.com"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"articleHeader\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"u381840-98\">\n<h1 id=\"u381840-9\"><span id=\"u381844\"><span id=\"u381845\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"59\" height=\"80\" src=\"https:\/\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/description\/dromgoole%2c%20glenn_headshot2b.jpg\"  id=\"u381845_img\" \/><\/span><\/span><span id=\"u381840\">Texas Reads<\/span><span id=\"u381840-5\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lonestarliterary.com\/texas-reads.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span id=\"u381840-3\">&gt;&gt; archive<\/span><\/a><\/span><span id=\"u381840-8\">Glenn Dromgoole<\/span><\/h1>\n<h1 id=\"u381840-12\">5.27.2018\u00a0 Photos capture grandeur of Texas scenes<\/h1>\n<p id=\"u381840-17\"><span>If I were selecting the most elegant Texas book of the year<\/span> published so far in 2018, two titles would be at the top of the list.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u381840-26\">Last week I told you about <span>Horses of the American West: Portrayals by Twenty-Four Artists<\/span> by <span>Heidi Brady<\/span> and <span>Scott White<\/span> (Texas A&#038;M University Press, $40 hardcover).<\/p>\n<p id=\"u381840-33\"><span id=\"u382502\"><span id=\"u382494\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"readableLargeImageContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/description\/braun%2c%20as%20far%20as%20you%20can%20see_cover%20sm.jpg\"  id=\"u382494_img\" \/><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/span>Well, the other one is <span>As Far As You Can See: Picturing Texas, <\/span>featuring the spectacular photographs of veteran Austin photographer <span>Kenny Braun<\/span> (University of Texas Press, $45 hardcover).<\/p>\n<p id=\"u381840-36\">Measuring 10 by 13 inches, the full-color, 200-page volume is the quintessential coffee-table book, virtually commanding visitors to pick it up and savor the grandeur of Texas nature.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u381840-39\">The photographs are organized by region, beginning with West Texas and continuing through the Gulf Coast, Central Texas, the Panhandle, East Texas, Prairies &#038; Lakes, and South Texas, showcasing the state\u2019s scenic diversity.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u381840-42\">Sixty-five of the photographs receive magnificent double-page treatments, and most of the others get a full page in the boldly lavish layout.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u381840-45\">If I had to pick a favorite from the book, I would go with the photo labeled \u201cTwelve Feet Deep,\u201d showing six pair of bare legs dangling from a bridge at Camp Tonkawa Springs in East Texas.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u381840-49\"><span id=\"u382525\"><span id=\"u382517\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"readableLargeImageContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/description\/braun%2c%20as%20far%20as%20you%20can%20see_picturing%20texas_image%20sm.jpg\"  id=\"u382517_img\" \/><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"u381840-51\"><span>\u201cTwelve Feet Deep\u201d is one of the photographs from Kenny Braun\u2019s book As Far As You Can See: Picturing Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"u381840-55\">\u201cI am continually awed, and surprised, by the natural beauty of Texas,\u201d photographer Braun writes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u381840-60\">In <span>As Far As You Can See,<\/span> Braun shares the gift of nature with everyone who picks up and flips through his wonderful book.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u381840-66\">Author <span>S.C. Gwynne<\/span> (Empire of the Summer Moon) contributes a foreword for the volume, part of the UT Press photography series sponsored by Abilene\u2019s <span>Bill and Alice Wright.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"u381840-73\"><span>Midland A to Z:<\/span> Three years ago Abilene Christian University Press published a children\u2019s book, Abilene A to Z, that <span>Jay Moore<\/span> and I co-authored about Abilene history and culture.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u381840-78\">Now ACU Press has published a similar volume featuring the history and culture of Midland, written and photographed by <span>Jimmy and Karen Patterson<\/span>. (A is for Airport; B for Bush Family; C for Churches; D for Downtown; E for Eating; F for Football, etc.)<\/p>\n<p id=\"u381840-81\">The format is adaptable to other medium and large cities as well, as a way of introducing young readers to a community\u2019s distinctive features.
