New Austin Central Library among five best libraries in the world<\/h1>\n

The Austin Central Library, opened in 2017 <\/span>at a new site overlooking Lady Bird Lake along West C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez Drive, has been named one of five finalists throughout the world for Public Library of the Year by the International Federation of Library Associations.<\/p>\n

The other finalists are libraries from Brazil, Netherlands, Norway and Singapore. According to the City of Austin, the award is given every year to a new library. The award takes into account local culture, sustainability, digital development and the wishes and needs of users.<\/p>\n

\u201cAustin has one of the greatest libraries in the world, as this nomination confirms,\u201d said Austin Mayor Steve Adler in a statement. \u201cOur library stands as a testament to the great things we can accomplish together.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Austin Central Library has six floors, over 100 computers, an art gallery and a caf\u00e9, along with a rooftop reading and observation area. The building was recognized for its focus on sustainability and its interior design.<\/p>\n

The winner will be announced on Aug. 28 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at the IFLA Annual Meeting.<\/p>\n

The Poetry Society of Texas <\/span>convenes their Annual Summer Conference in a different area of the state each July. This year\u2019s 49th Annual Summer Conference will meet Thursday\u2013Saturday, July 12\u201314, 2018.<\/p>\n

Texas Book Festival reveals the first 15 authors for 2018 festival weekend lineup<\/h1>\n

Annual festival to showcase acclaimed authors Tayari Jones, Erin Entrada Kelly, Sandra Cisneros, David Grann, and Leslie Jamison, among others<\/h1>\n

<\/span><\/span>AUSTIN \u2014 The Texas Book Festival is excited to announce fifteen authors who will appear at the 2018 Texas Book Festival Weekend October 27\u201328,<\/span> including 2018 Newbery medalist Erin Entrada Kelly,<\/span> bestselling author of an Oprah Book Club pick Tayari Jones,<\/span> and poet and multifaceted author Sandra Cisneros.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first round of 2018 Festival authors once again represents a diverse array of topics, genres, and writers, including acclaimed poets, illustrators, and bestselling authors of both fiction and nonfiction.<\/p>\n

Tayari Jones will present her new novel, An American Marriage,<\/span> the bestseller which was picked for Oprah\u2019s Book Club this year. At its heart a love story, An American Marriage<\/span> confronts thorny issues around race, the criminal justice system, and the complexities of the human heart.<\/p>\n

David Grann<\/span>, the #1 New York Times<\/span> bestselling author of Killers of the Flower Moon,<\/span> will present his latest biography, The White Darkness.<\/span> Generously illustrated with full-color photos, the book chronicles the true story of Henry Worsley, a decorated British special forces officer obsessed with a mission to walk across Antarctica alone, and his experiences as he pushed himself to the extremes of human capacity.<\/p>\n

Celebrated poet and author Sandra Cisneros will present her new chapbook, Puro Amor,<\/span> a bilingual short story that contains illustrations and line drawings by the author. Puro Amor<\/span> reflects on the lives of characters Mister and Missus Rivera and their home, which is overflowing with rescue animals. For more than fifty years, Cisneros\u2019s short stories, novels, poetry, and essays have explored the lives of the working class.<\/p>\n

Leslie Jamison,<\/span> bestselling author of the 2014 essay collection The Empathy Exams, <\/span>will present her new memoir, The Recovering.<\/span> A New York Times bestseller and a deeply personal, in-depth look at addiction, The Recovering<\/span> demonstrates that the story of recovery can be as electrifying as the train wreck itself.<\/p>\n

For young readers, 2018 Newbery medalist Erin Entrada Kelly will present her latest middle grade novel, You Go First, <\/span>a story that explores issues of family, bullying, word games, and the ever-complicated world of middle school friendships.<\/p>\n

Bestselling and award-winning author of The Magic Tree House series Mary Pope Osborne<\/span> will present her brand new Magic Tree House adventure, Hurricane Heroes in Texas,<\/span> in which beloved time-traveling adventurers Jack and Annie are whisked back to 1900 Galveston, where they find out a big storm is coming and everyone must help.<\/p>\n

The 2018 Texas Book Festival poster, revealed last week, is created by Austin-based artist Valerie Fowler<\/span>. Her oil painting \u201cSpring, Everything Changes\u201d features a surrealistic interpretation of Fredericksburg peach trees in bloom.<\/p>\n

In addition to the above authors, the 2018 TBF lineup will feature 250 celebrated and emerging writers, including journalists, artists, scientists, and more. The Festival Weekend includes acclaimed authors at readings, panel discussions, and signings; exhibitor booths and food vendors; tents and venues, including cooking, C-SPAN, children\u2019s entertainment, and live music performances. Spread throughout the grounds of the state capitol and along Austin\u2019s iconic Congress Avenue, the 2018 Texas Book Festival Weekend will take place on October 27 and 28, 2018.<\/p>\n
