Utley and Austin preservation architect Stanley O. Graves<\/span> combine two of their passions \u2014 history and golf \u2014 in <span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tamupress.com\/product\/Links-to-the-Past,9310.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Links to the Past: The Hidden History on Texas Golf Courses<\/span><\/a><\/span> (Texas A&#038;M University Press, $26 hardcover).<\/p>\n<p id=\"u409606-24\">It\u2019s a fascinating look at 18 golf courses and their connection to history \u2014 from dinosaurs to a Comanche raid to Theodore Roosevelt\u2019s Rough Riders to a deadly race riot. They also work in quite a bit of golf history and interesting anecdotes along the way.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u409606-27\">Among the courses covered are the Menard Golf Course, the Campus Course at Texas A&#038;M, Brackenridge Park Golf Course in San Antonio, the San Saba River Course, and the Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u409606-30\">\u201cOur overarching goal,\u201d the authors write, \u201cis to talk about Texas history in a new way, one that we hope will be fun and enlightening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"u409606-33\">Utley, chief historian for the Center for Texas Public History at Texas State University, has also written books about historic military sites in Texas and some of the more notable roadside historical markers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u409606-38\"><span>Hosting butterflies: <\/span>Texas A&#038;M University Press has published another one of its noteworthy full-color field guides \u2014 this one having to do with plants and butterflies.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u409606-49\"><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tamupress.com\/product\/Native-Host-Plants-for-Texas-Butterflies,9292.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Native Host Plants for Texas Butterflies<\/span><\/a><\/span> by <span>Jim Weber,<\/span> <span>Lynne Weber<\/span> and <span>Roland H. Wauer<\/span> ($30 flexbound) tells \u2014 in mostly layman\u2019s language \u2014 about wildflowers, trees, shrubs and vines and the caterpillars and butterflies that are attracted to them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u409606-52\">Color maps indicate the sections of the state where the various plants are prevalent.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u409606-63\"><span><span id=\"u409667\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tamupress.com\/product\/Tired-Hungry-and-Standing-in-One-Spot-for-Twelve,9000.aspx\" id=\"u409659\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"readableLinkWithLargeImage\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"readableLargeImageContainer float\"><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/description\/cortez%2c%20essential%20cop%20essays_cover%20sm.jpg\"  id=\"u409659_img\" \/><\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/span><\/span><span>On being a cop:<\/span> <span>Sarah Cortez<\/span> is an author, a poet, and a cop. She wrote a poetry collection called <span>How to Undress a Cop,<\/span> and followed that up with <span>Vanishing Points: Poems and Photographs of Texas Roadside Memorials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"u409606-70\">Now, after more than two decades in law enforcement in the Houston area, she has produced a book of essays about her experiences, <span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tamupress.com\/product\/Tired-Hungry-and-Standing-in-One-Spot-for-Twelve,9000.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tired, Hungry, Standing in One Spot for Twelve Hours: Essential Cop Essays<\/a><\/span> (Texas Review Press, $22.95 paperback, 108 pages).<\/p>\n<p id=\"u409606-73\">The essays give a nitty-gritty look at what it\u2019s like to be a cop on patrol \u2014 the dangers and the harsh realities police face every day, but also the sense of duty and commitment to protecting the public.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u409606-76\">* * * * *<\/p>\n<p id=\"u409606-83\"><span id=\"u409606-78\">Glenn Dromgoole<\/span> writes about Texas books and authors.
