Borderplex community celebrates books October 20<\/h1>\n

EL PASO \u2014 The tenth annual El Paso Community College Literary Fiesta<\/span> takes place Saturday, October 20, 2018. The fiesta will be held from 12 to 5 p.m. at the El Paso Public Library at 501 N. Oregon Street.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s author lineup includes Sylvia Aguilar-Z\u00e9leny, Marina Monsisvais, Larry Welsh, Bruce Berman, Lisa McNiel, David Romo, <\/span>and Emmy P\u00e9rez.<\/span> The fiesta will feature a children\u2019s corner and awards, games, workshops, readings, a book fair, a haunted house, crafts, and plenty of refreshments.<\/p>\n

According to their website, El Paso Community College Literary Fiesta is an annual festival which celebrates literacy in the Borderplex. The fiesta strives to raise awareness of literary accomplishments, recognizes those supporting literacy in the community, and works to enrich readers of every age.<\/p>\n

The El Paso Community College Literary Fiesta was founded in 2009 by a group of EPCC professors who valued the importance of literacy in the Borderplex community. It began as a small celebration of the literary arts and has grown over the years to highlight innovative literary community projects and authors.<\/p>\n

$1,200 and title up for grabs at 8th Texas Grand Slam<\/h1>\n

BRYAN \u2014 The Texas Grand Slam Poetry Festival<\/span> is a three-day poetry feast featuring forty-two poets competing for a grand prize of $1,200 and the title: Texas Grand Slam Poetry Champion.<\/p>\n

The Last Chance Slam is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 18 at Lupa\u2019s Coffee; the preliminary slams and semi-finals begin at 6 p.m. at The Palace, Revolution Cafe and Bar, and The Village on Friday, October 19; the final stage, which consists of three rounds of competition, opens at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 20 at the Rudder Theatre.<\/p>\n

The seven runners-up from finals night, or the fourth- through tenth-place poets will be paid $150. The poet taking first place wins $1,200, second place earns $600, and third place takes home $300.<\/p>\n

The Texas Grand Slam Poetry Festival is produced by Mic Check Poetry. Judges are randomly selected by the host and bout manager. The performance order for final competition is by random draw.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span>West Texas Book Festival honors Dromgoole with A. C. Greene Award, brings a full slate of programming to Abilene Oct. 18\u201320<\/h1>\n

ABILENE \u2014 The long-running West Texas Book Festival<\/span> returns to Abilene in 2018 with a robust lineup of activities October 18\u201320. One perennial festival highlight, the Books & Boots Luncheon,<\/span> will honor journalist, author, bookseller, and publisher Glenn Dromgoole <\/span>with the festival\u2019s prestigious A. C. Greene Award.<\/p>\n

Texas Cookbook Gala<\/h1>\n

Thursday, October 18, Abilene Country Club Dinner begins, 6 p.m.<\/p>\n

The gala features incredible vintners and featured cookbook author Sarah Penrod. <\/span>Penrod is an award-winning 7th-generation Texan, professional chef, and TV personality who charmed audiences as the vivacious and warm-hearted Texpert on The Next Food Network Star! Penrod\u2019s cookbook, Urban Cowgirl,<\/span> celebrates modern Southern culture with decadent Texas recipes.<\/p>\n

Hosted at the Abilene Country Club, guests come dressed in their finest to enjoy an evening of friends and fine cuisine from the featured cookbook\/s as well as enjoy a selection of wonderful wines from Texas vintners.<\/p>\n

Friday, October 19 Abilene Woman\u2019s Club<\/p>\n

Using photographs from his latest book, The Whole Damn Cheese: Maggie Smith, <\/span>Border Legend as a backdrop, Bill Wright<\/span> will share anecdotes about Maggie Smith \u2014 the woman whose life in the Big Bend country has become the stuff of legend.<\/p>\n

For more than twenty years, from 1943 until her death in 1965, Maggie Smith served folks on both\u00a0 sides of the border as doctor, lawyer, midwife, herbalist, banker, self-appointed justice of the peace, and coroner. As she put it, she was \u201cthe whole damn cheese\u201d in Hot Springs, Texas. She was also an accomplished smuggler with a touch of romance as well as larceny in her heart. Maggie\u2019s family history is virtually a history of the Texas frontier, and her story outlines the beginnings and early development of Big Bend National Park.<\/p>\n

Books will be available for purchase following the luncheon with 10% of the proceeds benefiting the Abilene Woman\u2019s Club.<\/p>\n

Friday, October 19 Various Campuses<\/p>\n

Authors of children\u2019s books will be visiting elementary schools throughout the day.<\/p>\n

Cate Berry<\/span> is author of Penguin and Tiny Shrimp Don\u2019t Do Bedtime! <\/span>It was pinned a Junior Library Guild selection. Her second book, Chicken Break,<\/span> releases in Fall 2019.<\/p>\n

Carmen Oliver<\/span> is author of Bears Make the Best Reading Buddies, <\/span>her debut picture book, and The Favio Chavez Story. Carmen lives in Round Rock, Texas,<\/span> with her family.<\/p>\n

Tammi Sauer<\/span> is author of Mary Had a Little Glam.<\/span> To date, Sauer has sold 28 picture books to major publishing houses. Sauer lives in Edmond, Oklahoma, with her family, one dog, two geckos, and a tank full of random fish.<\/p>\n

The A.C. Greene Award is presented annually to a distinguished Texas author for a lifetime achievement. The A.C. Greene Award is named for author, columnist, and Abilene native, A.C. Greene.<\/p>\n

This year, the West Texas Book Festival is proud to honor Glenn Dromgoole<\/span> as the 2018 A.C. Greene Award recipient. As a tribute to his literary memoirs, Glenn has written a new book called Book Guy: One Author\u2019s Adventures in Publishing.<\/span> \u201cYou\u2019ve probably heard me say that every book tells at least two stories \u2014 the story inside the covers of the book, and the story outside the covers,\u201d says Dromgoole. \u201cIn Book Guy, <\/span>I focus on the stories outside the covers of my thirty (now thirty-one) books and some others that I\u2019ve helped publish.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dromgoole will be presented with a piece of original framed art, donated by the artist, H. C. Zachry.<\/span><\/p>\n

The community is invited to join the annual West Texas Book Festival fun featuring a celebration of authors and writing in the Lone Star State with a local author showcase and reception. At this great event local authors who have had a book published within the last 12 months will be available at the library, highlighting the local writing talent in our community and their works. Everyone is welcome to come out and attend this reception, and hear brief remarks from each of the authors present. Join us for a special tribute to Abilene! Mayor Anthony Williams<\/span> will begin the book reading with sharing some of his favorite letters from Abilene A to Z<\/span> by Glenn Dromgoole<\/span> and Jay Moore.<\/span> Following the mayor, other celebrity guest readers include theatre students from the local school campuses.<\/p>\n

The first 50 families will receive a FREE copy of the Abilene A to Z book. Limit one copy per household. In addition, participants may take home children\u2019s books from the Friends\u2019 Annual Book Sale selections. Limited quantities available. Each household will receive a commemorative bag to store their books.<\/p>\n

Boerne Book & Arts Fest Brings Authors, Art, Crafts, Music & More to Boerne Main Plaza<\/h1>\n

Kinky Friedman to share stories and perform from new album<\/h1>\n

Another chapter of the Boerne Book & Arts Fest<\/span> will open October 6 on Boerne\u2019s Main Plaza with a celebration featuring live artist demos, author discussion panels, children\u2019s activities and an appearance by Texas\u2019s beloved singer, songwriter, humorist, and politician Kinky Friedman.<\/span> Admission is free.<\/p>\n

The one-day literary and arts celebration offers a little something for every age group, including seven engaging discussion panels of authors who will cover topics ranging from the Houston Astros\u2019 World Series-winning season to one of Texas\u2019 best Honky Tonks, The Broken Spoke. Kinky Friedman will appear at 3 p.m., performing songs from his new album, Circus of Life,<\/span> and sharing readings from Heroes of a Texas Childhood<\/span> in the Main Plaza gazebo. Panels will take place throughout the day at Main Plaza and upstairs at the Dienger Trading Company.<\/p>\n

In addition to panel discussions and book signings, the festival will feature several Texas publishers\u2019 books by showcased authors available for purchase, and a special \u201cFamily Campfire\u201d area where appearances by Clifford the Big Red Dog will delight readers of all ages and provide fun photo opportunities alongside storytelling and hands-on crafts led by professional artists.<\/p>\n

Nominations open for Texas State Artists<\/h1>\n

AUSTIN \u2014 \u201cThere is a government code that says that the legislature will name a Texas poet laureate, a state musician, and then state visual artist<\/span>s\u2014one in two-dimensional art and one in three-dimensional art,\u201d says Anina Moore with the Texas Commission on the Arts.<\/p>\n

Moore says artists don\u2019t receive money for this honor but there are other benefits. \u201cWe do see some recipients able to market themselves more widely or become invited to festivals and other events based on the fact that they\u2019ve been named as state poet laureate or visual artist, things like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

(Editorial aside: While being named a \u201cTexas State Artist\u201d is certainly an honor, plumbers are paid for their work; accountants are paid for their work; crop dusters are paid for their work. Artists of all sorts are expected to work for free, for exposure, for \u201cthings like that.\u201d<\/span>)<\/p>\n
