Or any year, for that matter.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Goudy Old Style&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">The 456-page full-color coffee table volume ($60 hardcover) is a joint project of TCU Press and the Center for Texas Studies at TCU and accompanies an exhibition at the Witte Museum in San Antonio. TCU Press promotes the book as \u201cthe first attempt to analyze and characterize Texas art on such a grand scale.\u201d Certainly it belongs in the library of anyone serious about Texas art.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Goudy Old Style&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">Fourteen Texas art historians and scholars contributed essays covering a wide range of topics related to art history in Texas, generously illustrated by about 400 paintings and other works of art. Each illustration includes a brief description giving the artist\u2019s name, title of the piece, year it was created, medium, and where it is today.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Goudy Old Style&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">Tyler, the volume\u2019s editor and retired director of the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, leads off the selections with \u201cThe Art of Early Texas.\u201d A few other essays: \u201cThe Texas Landscape\u201d by Susie Kalil; \u201cHispanic Art in Texas\u201d by Richard Romo; \u201cTexas History Paintings\u201d by Sam Deshong Ratcliffe; \u201cTexas Impressionism\u201d by Rebecca Lawton; \u201cThe Texas Scene Is the American Scene\u201d by Francine Carraro; and \u201cEarly African American Art in Texas\u201d by Scott A. Sherer.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Goudy Old Style&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">\u201cLiberty and Lone Star Modernism\u201d by K. Robinson Edwards is the concluding piece, in which he makes the case for Georgia O\u2019Keeffe as \u201cTexas\u2019s pioneer modernist.\u201d O\u2019Keeffe taught briefly in Texas early in her career and found inspiration in her frequent trips to Palo Duro Canyon. \u201cShe moved out of Texas permanently in 1918,\u201d Edwards writes, \u201cbut the impact of her West Texas years affected her art for the rest of her long career.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Goudy Old Style&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">There\u2019s a lot to read\u2014and even more to see\u2014in <em>The Art of Texas: 250 Years<\/em>, an impressive tribute to Texas artists.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Goudy Old Style&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">A few years ago, Carlton Stowers and I put together a volume listing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9780891123248?aff=LoneStarLit\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">101 Essential Texas Books<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">.
