The slim volume contains a bounty of riches in terms of words, wisdom, and recipes. The book features eleven Texas poets laureate \u2014 luminaries like <span>Jan Seale, Walt McDonald, Red Steagall, Karla K. Morton,<\/span> and more \u2014 who share their poetry, essays, and family recipes. It is a feast of offerings that you want to take time and savor.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-29\">Here&#8217;s one example \u2014 \u201cEating Texas\u201d from <span>Jan Seale, <\/span>the 2012 Texas Poet Laureate.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-32\"><span>Eating Texas<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-35\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s taken a long apprenticeship<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-37\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to make waffles in the shape of Texas.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-39\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 First there were mountains over Waco.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-41\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Then the Panhandle sank.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-44\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A few more false starts when<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-46\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the Red River swamped Oklahoma<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-48\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and the Rio Grande dripped into Mexico.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-50\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Now I can make perfect ones.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-53\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 All I have to do is take care<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-55\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to stop pouring the batter a little shy<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-57\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of El Paso, Dalhart, and Texarkana.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-59\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 For some reason, Brownsville needs more.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-62\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Otherwise, my grandchildren complain they<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-64\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 don\u2019t have the tail of Texas to bite off.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-67\">She shares classic recipes for roast and gravy, and Frijoles Borrachos (Drunk Beans), as well as fun innovative recipes like Papaya Mama Cobbler and Gloria\u2019s Mexican Limeade (made with celery).<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-70\">Most of the recipes in this book are Texan and Southern favorites, like brisket and homemade BBQ sauce, apricot fried pies, a grandmother\u2019s recipe for chow-chow, cornbread, grits, and ham. There are quite a few intriguing recipes, like Bacon Bloody Mary, Chimayo Cocktail, and Cherry Coke Jell-O Salad.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-73\">I found dollops of humor sprinkled liberally throughout and some sage advice about cooking, writing, and living.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-78\">Poetry is food for the soul, and food doesn\u2019t just fill stomachs, but also builds relationships and precious memories. <span id=\"u32013-76\">Cooking with the Texas Poets Laureate<\/span> gives readers the best of both.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-83\">Here\u2019s an excerpt from <span>Alan Birkelbach,<\/span> the 2005 Poet Laureate of Texas, which perfectly illustrates that:<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-86\">\u201cI can only bring you my words.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-88\">And my hands. These hands. I know these hands.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u32013-90\">I have always had them.
