This year\u2019s festival boasted more than three hundred authors and approximately a hundred panels and author signings. &nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">The Lone Star Lit team was able to find that Texas connection its always seeking in a number of panels, many happening in the Texas Tent (of course!), but also other tents and in the Capitol extension rooms. Our list:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">\u201cTexas Institute of Letters Presents: Loss, Death and Borders\u201d with <strong>Natalia Sylvester <\/strong>(<em>Everyone Knows You Go Home<\/em>), <strong>David Bowles<\/strong> (<em>They Call Me G\u00fcero: A Border Kid&#8217;s Poems<\/em>), and <strong>Tarfia Faizullah <\/strong>(<em>Registers of Illuminated Villages: Poems<\/em>), who grew up in Midland and recited a poem, \u201cWest Texas Nocturne,\u201d from her newest collection.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">\u201cPEN America Presents: Writing in a World of Borders and Bonds\u201d with <strong>Jennine Cap\u00f3 Crucet<\/strong> (<em>My Time Among the&nbsp;Whites<\/em>), whose new book had been burned at a college in Georgia the week before, and <strong>Margaret Wilkerson Sexton<\/strong> (<em>The Revisioners<\/em>).&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">\u201cWriters\u2019 League of Texas: Obsessed with Texas,\u201d for a fascinating conversation on archival silence and place, featuring <strong>Monica Mu\u00f1oz Martinez <\/strong>(<em>The Injustice Never Leaves&nbsp;You<\/em>), <strong>Cameron Dezen Hammon<\/strong> (<em>This Is My&nbsp;Body<\/em>), and <strong>Sergio Troncoso<\/strong> (<em>A Peculiar Kind of Immigrant&#8217;s Son<\/em>), moderated by the WLT\u2019s <strong>Becka Oliver<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">&nbsp;\u201cTexas Music Legends: Janis Joplin and Stevie Ray Vaughan\u201d with <strong>Alan Paul and Andy Aledort<\/strong> (<em>Texas Flood<\/em>) and <strong>Holly George-Warren<\/strong> (<em>Janis<\/em>), moderated by Austin\u2019s own rock \u2019n\u2019 roll historian <strong>Ed Ward<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">\u201cSunrise\/Sunset: Remembering the Life and Work of Bill Wittliff.\u201d Wittliff passed away earlier this year, and <strong>Bill Broyles, Elizabeth Crook, Stephen Harrigan<\/strong> (who told a great story about water-witching with Bill), <strong>John Spong, and Steven Davis<\/strong> gathered to remember him. <strong>Reid Wittliff<\/strong>, Bill\u2019s son, was an unexpected treat, reading from his father\u2019s last work, a book of solar photography,&nbsp;<em>Sunrise\/Sunset<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><strong>James Magnuson<\/strong>\u2019s conversation with <strong>Tim O\u2019Brien<\/strong> about <em>Dad\u2019s Maybe Book<\/em>. O\u2019Brien owned the place and eyes may have leaked. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">(A couple of sessions were attended purely for fangirl purposes: U.N. Ambassador and Pulitzer Prize-winner <strong>Samantha Power<\/strong> (<em>The Education of an Idealist<\/em>) and bestselling author <strong>Andrew McCall Smith <\/strong>(<em>To the Land of Long Lost Friends<\/em>).)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent3\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">In addition to observing the sessions, the Lone Star Lit team also had the honor of actively participating as moderators. Owner\/Publisher Kristine Hall started the Sunday sessions as moderator of \u201cBuried Truths: New Thrills and Suspense in Investigative Crime Fiction,\u201d featuring <strong>Lisa Sandlin<\/strong> (<em>The Bird Boys<\/em>) and <strong>Thomas Zigal<\/strong> (<em>Outcry Witness<\/em>) for a darkly atmospheric start to the day.&nbsp; Managing Editor Michelle Newby Lancaster ended the day as moderator a panel called \u201cPianos Keys and Film Reels: The Art Object as Plot Device\u201d with <strong>Chris Cander<\/strong> (<em>The Weight of a Piano<\/em>) and <strong>Dominic Smith<\/strong> (<em>The Electric Hotel<\/em>), during which it was decided that art does change the world. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\">The Texas Book Festival offered much more than the sessions, and the Lone Star Lit team took it all in, including plenty of time in the exhibitor tents and maybe a few visits to the food trucks. There was a champagne toast to the Writers\u2019 League of Texas Book Award winners, first time face-to-face meetings with familiar and new people and publishers and booksellers, and an obscene number of books were purchased (had to be done &#8212; it\u2019s a fundraiser, after all). &nbsp;The event was definitely\u2026 one for the books. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lonestarliterary.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/article_body_images\/2019-10-26%2014.02.34-1.jpg\" style=\"border-style:solid;
