Highland Park presents Sinatra biographer Kaplan in Authors LIVE! Oct. 29<\/h1>\n

The Friends of the Highland Park Library,<\/span> the Highland Park United Methodist Church, and the Friends of the SMU Libraries will host James Kaplan<\/span> in an Authors LIVE! program 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29 at Wesley Hall at Dallas’s HPUMC.<\/p>\n

Kaplan\u2019s new biography, Sinatra:\u00a0 The Chairman,<\/span> will be signed and available for purchase before and after the program. The 7 p.m. program is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n

The 6 p.m. private reception with the author is $30 by reservation only and includes a signed copy of the book.<\/p>\n

James Kaplan has been writing about people and ideas in business and popular culture, as well as notable fiction (Best American Short Stories<\/span>), for over three decades. His essays and reviews, as well as more than a hundred major profiles of figures, have appeared in many magazines including The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, Esquire,<\/span> and New York<\/span>. His novels include Pearl’s Progress<\/span> and Two Guys From Verona, <\/span>a New York Times<\/span> Notable Book for 1998. His nonfiction works include The Airport, You Cannot Be Serious<\/span> (co-authored with John McEnroe), Dean and Me: A Love Story<\/span> (with Jerry Lewis), and the first volume of his definitive biography of Frank Sinatra, Frank: The Voice.<\/span> He lives in Westchester, New York, with his wife and three sons.<\/p>\n

Richardson Adult Literacy Center to host Buns & Roses Romance Tea for Literacy Oct. 4<\/h1>\n

October 4, 2015, will mark the tenth year<\/span> that romance authors and readers have gathered for the Buns & Roses Romance Tea for Literacy in Richardson, Texas, to benefit the Richardson Adult Literacy Center. Hats, laughter, and the joy of talking books abound.<\/p>\n

Katie Patterson, executive director of RALC, says, \u201cFor the Richardson Adult Literacy Center, Buns & Roses is an incredible expression by romance writers and readers from across the country of their passion for helping others improve their literacy. Because of this event, RALC is able to continue offering English as a Second Language instruction to hundreds of adults in our community who are eager to improve their lives through improved literacy skills.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year, New York Times<\/span> bestselling author Tessa Dare<\/span> will headline 26 romance authors who host tables and visit with fans, readers, and literacy supporters. Attendees purchase a ticket to sit with their favorite author. Each author adds her own flair by decorating her table with gifts for her guests. In addition, each attendee receives a complimentary copy of the keynote speaker\u2019s book and an autograph keepsake booklet for gathering the authors\u2019 autographs. Andrea Horvath, longtime romance reader, attends each year \u201cbecause it\u2019s a great way to meet new authors and support a wonderful charity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Authors hosting tables are Tessa Dare, Katharine Ashe, D. D. Ayres, Kathleen Baldwin, Linda Broday, Lily Dalton, HelenKay Dimon, Suzanne Ferrell, Addison Fox, Shana Galen, Patience Griffin, Nancy Haddock, Barb Han, Candace Havens, Lorraine Heath, Sophie Jordan, Diane Kelly, Liz Lipperman, Lizbeth Selvig, Tracy Solheim, Catherine Spangler, Kay Thomas, J. D. Tyler, Becky Wade, Jaye Wells,<\/span> and Lori Wilde.<\/span><\/p>\n

The event closes with a book signing, providing attendees with a chance to visit with all the authors, purchase books, and get those books autographed.<\/p>\n

The tea will be held Sun., Oct. 4, 3-6:00 pm at the Renaissance Hotel, Richardson, Texas. Tickets are $45. Those wishing to spend a little extra time with the authors can purchase a $30 ticket to the VIP reception held Saturday night in a private home. Lit Crawl at the Texas Book Festival, Oct. 17<\/h1>\n

Bat Scavenger Hunt, Nerd Jeopardy, Literary Death Match,
Lit Crawl Against Humanity, LGBT storytelling, and more!<\/h1>\n

AUSTIN\u2014 Lit Crawl Austin returns to the Texas Book Festival<\/span> on Saturday night, October 17, 2015. The annual literary pub crawl, a co-production of the Texas Book Festival and Litquake Foundation, features some of America\u2019s most groundbreaking writers onstage at various East Austin venues in a series of offbeat readings, literary games, and performances.<\/p>\n

Inspired by San Francisco’s long-running Lit Crawl and produced with their participation, the 2015 Lit Crawl Austin will include Balderdash; the always-popular YA ghost stories in the Texas State Cemetery; tales about personal fiascos; Nerd Jeopardy; a LGBT storytelling showcase, Literary Death Match; Whose Line Is It Anyway; Lit Crawl Against Humanity (a literary version of the popular game Cards Against Humanity); a coloring contest (with cocktails) for adults; and more.<\/p>\n

This year’s Lit Crawl program will be designed by Festival author Zachary Thomas Dodson<\/span> (Bats of the Republic<\/span>) and will include a Bat Scavenger Hunt as a part of the design. The Bat Scavenger Hunt will be ongoing throughout the evening, and literary director Steph Opitz<\/span> says the intricately designed program will be a collector\u2019s item.<\/p>\n

Co-organizers Jill Meyers<\/span> and Steph Opitz<\/span> weigh in. Meyers says, \u201cLit Crawl this year is going to be insane (in a good way), in celebration of our fifth year in Austin. From spooky ghost stories for all ages in the Texas State Cemetery to R-rated Lit Crawl Against Humanity games\u2014and everything in between\u2014we\u2019ve got it.\u201d Opitz adds, \u201cBy day Texas Book Fest authors will talk thoughtfully about their latest books, by night they’ll hit up the east side for literary-ish shenanigans.\u201d<\/p>\n
