It is a practical, approachable manual that begins with a question: \u201cWhy do you want to plant a vineyard?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"u3563-13\">\u201cPlanting and tending a vineyard can be a rewarding experience,\u201d Kamas writes, \u201cbut it takes far more time and resources than most prospective growers realize. \u201cMany couples entering the business find that, having purchased a vineyard, their \u2018together\u2019 time is spent solely erecting trellis, tying up young vines, and spaying weeds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"u3563-16\">He goes on in later chapters to discuss technical and practical topics in easy-to-read language, covering such matters as choosing a vineyard site, rootstock selection, canopy management, diseases affecting grapevines, and vineyard equipment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u3563-19\">The book includes more than 160 color photos, 10 maps, and an index.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u3563-25\">Kamas lives in Fredericksburg and works with fruit growers across the state through the Texas A&#038;M AgriLife Extension Service. He is co-author of <span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tamupress.com\/product\/Texas-Peach-Handbook,6534.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span id=\"u3563-22\">The Texas Peach Handbook.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"u3563-32\">\u25a0 Seashell Guide: <span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tamupress.com\/product\/Texas-Seashells,7879.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span id=\"u3563-28\">Texas Seashells: A Field Guide<\/span><\/a><\/span> (Texas A&#038;M University Press, $25 flexbound) covers 300 of the more common seashells found on Texas coastlines, with color photos of each species.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u3563-43\">The authors \u2014 <span id=\"u3563-35\">John W. Tunnell Jr., Noe C. Barrera,<\/span> and <span id=\"u3563-37\">Fabio Moretzsohn<\/span> \u2014 worked together on the comprehensive <span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tamupress.com\/product\/Encyclopedia-of-Texas-Seashells,5438.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span id=\"u3563-39\">Encyclopedia of Texas Seashells,<\/span><\/a><\/span> also published by Texas A&#038;M Press about five years ago. But its size and weight made it impractical as a field guide. So they have teamed up again, this time on a more compact version that will fit in a car\u2019s glove compartment. Whereas the encyclopedia chronicled about 900 species, the field guide focuses on the most common 300 \u2014 most of which, by the way, I think I have in my own collection.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u3563-46\">If you\u2019re planning a trip to the Gulf Coast this summer, you might want to consult this field guide.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u3563-57\">\u25a0 River Ride: If you like a good outdoors story, check out <span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tamupress.com\/product\/Running-the-River,7730.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span id=\"u3563-49\">Running the River: Secrets of the Sabine<\/span><\/a><\/span> by <span id=\"u3563-53\">Wes Ferguson,<\/span> with color photographs by <span id=\"u3563-55\">Jacob Croft Botter<\/span> (Texas A&#038;M University Press, $23 flexbound).<\/p>\n<p id=\"u3563-59\">Ferguson and Botter took a boat trip down the Sabine River on the eastern boundary of the state and recorded their observations about the river, the people living along the river, and their own adventure trying to navigate the muddy and often dangerous waters all the way to the Gulf.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u3563-62\">Ferguson starts the narrative off with a bang: \u201cA man shot at us on our first day on the river. Of course he did. You expect that sort of thing to happen on the Sabine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"u3563-64\">Good reading.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u3563-67\">GLENN DROMGOOLE writes about Texas books and authors.
