11.15.15\u00a0\u00a0 New series focuses on women in Texas history<\/h1>\n

<\/a><\/span><\/span>Texas A&M University Press has announced a new book series, <\/span>Women in Texas History, sponsored by the Ruthe Winegarten Memorial Foundation.<\/p>\n

\u201cBooks in the series,\u201d write editors Nancy Baker Jones<\/span> and Cynthia Beeman,<\/span> \u201cwill focus on individual lives, events, and eras, as well as aspects of gender, race, class, and culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first book in the series is a biography, Allie Victoria Tennant and the Visual Arts in Dallas<\/span><\/a><\/span> by Austin College history professor Light Townsend Cummins<\/span> ($35 hardcover).<\/p>\n

Tennant (1892\u20131971), Cummins notes, was \u201cone of the best-known sculptors in Texas during her lifetime,\u201d especially for the \u201cTejas Warrior\u201d sculpture in Dallas\u2019s Fair Park. \u201cHer historical importance,\u201d he adds, \u201cstemmed not only from her art but also from her contributions to the development of cultural life in Dallas.\u201d<\/p>\n

And, he adds, she \u201cplayed an important role in improving the status of women in Texas\u201d from the 1920s to the 1960s.<\/p>\n

As part of the Women in Texas History series, two previously published books are being reissued in new paperback editions this fall:<\/p>\n

A Texas Suffragist: Diaries and Writings of Jane Y. McCallum<\/span><\/a><\/span> (1878\u20131957), edited by Janet G. Humphrey<\/span> ($22.95)<\/p>\n

Citizen at Last: The Woman Suffrage Movement in Texas,<\/span><\/a><\/span> edited by Ruthe Winegarten<\/span> and Judith N. McArthur<\/span> ($24.95)<\/p>\n

Legendary Texas Ranger:<\/span> \u201cI\u2019m Frank Hamer\u201d: The Life of a Texas Peace Officer<\/span><\/a><\/span> by John H. Jenkins<\/span> and Gordon Frost,<\/span> originally published in 1968, has been reissued in a new paperback edition by State House Press ($24.95).<\/p>\n

The 264 page biography includes about 75 pages of old photos, including more than 30 pages from the Clyde Barrow\u2013Bonnie Parker case, for which Hamer would become best known.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be a long time,\u201d someone wrote after Hamer\u2019s death, \u201cbefore another officer as picturesque and as blunt, as stubborn and as fearless, will pass this way again.\u201d Hamer \u201cparticipated in probably more gunfights than any other Ranger of his times,\u201d wrote longtime Department of Public Safety Director Homer Garrison, \u201cwas wounded 17 times, left for dead four times, and never once backed away from a fight.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span><\/span>Texas ABC:<\/span> I Love Texas: An ABC Adventure<\/a><\/span> by author\/artist\/entrepreneur Sandra Magsamen<\/span> (Sourcebooks, $12.99 hardcover) isn\u2019t written by a Texan, but she\u2019s on target with her clever rhyming text and appealing illustrations about armadillos, bluebonnets, cowboys, dude ranches, El Paso, football, Galveston, and so on.<\/p>\n

\u201cW is for West Texas, the birthplace of cowboy hats and boots,\u201d she writes, while \u201cX is for XOXO because we love having Texas roots.\u201d<\/p>\n
