He also has developed an interactive app, allowing children to hear the bird calls of the species featured in the book.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u65799-26\"><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Backyard-Birding-Adventure-Whats-Your\/dp\/1612542360\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>A Backyard Birding Adventure: What\u2019s in Your Yard?<\/span><\/a><\/span> (Brown Books, $16.95 hardcover), illustrated by <span>Holly Weinstein,<\/span> introduces children through rhyming text to ten common birds that may be found around their homes \u2014 such as the robin, blue jay, wren, woodpecker, and cardinal.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u65799-29\">Cummings includes a note to parents on how to help their children take up birding or bird watching as an educational and entertaining activity. \u201cThe first step is to put up a bird feeder,\u201d he suggests. \u201cAnother must is a birdbath.\u201d And a good pair of binoculars.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u65799-40\"><span><span id=\"u66575\"><span id=\"u66569\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"175\" height=\"262\" src=\"https:\/\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/description\/mcbeth%2c%20oil%20about%20ranching_cover%20sm.jpg\"  id=\"u66569_img\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><span>Oil and ranching:<\/span> <span>Dennis McBeth<\/span> of the Crews community has published <span>Oil About Ranching<\/span> (Ballinger Printing, $22.95 paperback), a collection of his columns printed in <span id=\"u65799-38\">Livestock Weekly<\/span> in San Angelo. The pieces are arranged pretty much in chronological order from April 2013 to August 2015, McBeth points out, chronicling the oil boom and bust over that period.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u65799-43\">In the introduction, McBeth apologizes in advance \u201cto any English teachers who might be drinking hot coffee and have a spasmodic reaction regarding the use\/misuse of the English language. Some of which may be intentional.\u201d He also says he has tried to \u201ckeep it clean,\u201d noting a friend\u2019s advice: \u201cBy leaving out the profanity from oilfield stories, it takes a third less ink and paper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"u65799-52\">In the <span id=\"u65799-46\">Livestock Weekly<\/span> column and in the book, McBeth\u2019s goal has been to \u201chelp bridge the information gap between ranchers and the oil field in an informative and entertaining manner.\u201d The book is available at Cactus Books in San Angelo and on line. Or contact the author at <span><a href=\"mailto:\/\/Dennis.McBeth@gmail.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dennis.McBeth@gmail.com<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u65799-60\"><span>Mineral Wells tales:<\/span> Stephenville author <span>James Pylant<\/span> has written <span>Texas Gothic: Fame, Crime &#038; Crazy Water<\/span> (Jacobus Books, $18.95 paperback), which he says is the \u201cuntold story of Mineral Wells.\u201d The book, Pylant says, include \u201ctrue tales of the town\u2019s forgotten past: murder, white slavery, prostitution, and a headless corpse.\u201d And, of course, the fourteen-story Baker Hotel, which is being renovated, and the Hexagon, a mansion designed like a honeycomb but torn down more than fifty years ago.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u65799-67\">One of the central characters in the book is Corinne Griffith, a Mineral Wells belle who would become a famous star in silent movies and one of America\u2019s richest women.
