Shah<\/span> ($45 hardcover) is filled with great photos from one of the best-known sports photographers of the past fifty years. Not all of the pictures are sports related, as Leifer shot dozens of cover photographs for  magazine as well as <span id=\"u126995-27\">Sports Illustrated,<\/span> but most are.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u126995-32\">Leifer writes about some of the athletes, movie stars, and other dignitaries he has known and photographed over the years. They include Muhammad Ali (on the cover), Mickey Mantle, Arnold Palmer, Joe Namath, and Bear Bryant, as well as Doris Day, Clint Eastwood, Willie Nelson, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u126995-35\">\u201cI started out shooting sports,\u201d Leifer writes, \u201cand, before I knew it, I was taking pictures of many of the greatest athletes of the past half century. \u201cNot only that, but my career also took unexpected turns that sent me off to distant locales I couldn\u2019t have even imagined. I ended up taking pictures of everyone from presidents and popes to movie stars and murderers \u2014 some of the most famous and infamous people on the planet. \u201cAnd almost every one of those pictures comes with a story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"u126995-38\">The 400-page book is packed with Leifer\u2019s color photographs and his frank and insightful commentary.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u126995-49\"><span><span id=\"u127173\"><a href=\"\/\/\" id=\"u127165\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"readableLinkWithLargeImage\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"readableLargeImageContainer float\"><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/description\/minson%2c%20prepare%20to%20defend%20yourself_cover%20sm.jpg\"  id=\"u127165_img\" \/><\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/span><\/span><span>Aging gracefully: <\/span><span>Dr. Matthew Minson, <\/span>who teaches in the Texas A&#038;M School of Public Health, has written a practical and whimsical guide to growing older. <span><a href=\"\/\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Prepare to Defend Yourself: How to Age Gracefully &#038; Escape with Your Dignity<\/span><\/a><\/span> (Texas A&#038;M University Press, $28 paperback) looks at ways to make life more bearable and fun after fifty.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u126995-52\">\u201cFor many,\u201d Minson writes, \u201cgrowing old is forbidding, even terrifying, and fraught with difficulty. For many others, growing old is a dynamic time of accomplishment, gratification, reflection, and reward, and, yes, fraught with difficulty. \u201cThe purpose of this book is to give you the tools and resources that will help shift your experiences toward the latter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"u126995-55\">Minson, also a cartoonist, sprinkles his drawings throughout the book as he discusses serious matters such as access to health care, financial resources, elder abuse and self-protection, sexuality, and end of life.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u126995-65\"><span><span id=\"u127160\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportsandoutdoors.guru\/\" id=\"u127152\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"readableLinkWithLargeImage\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"readableLargeImageContainer float\"><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/description\/mcdonald%2c%20they%20gave%20us%20baseball_cover%20sm.jpg\"  id=\"u127152_img\" \/><\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/span><\/span><span>Baseball parents:<\/span> Longtime Texas sportswriter Mark McDonald, now living in Midland, is the author of They Gave Us Baseball, Now Look What We\u2019ve Done: How Doting Parents and Nut-Job Coaches Screw Up the Game for Kids ($19.95 paperback). The title pretty much summarizes what the book is about.
