Christensen Jr. and Pixie Christensen (Texas A&M University Press, $35 hardcover). The book chronicles the architectural and historical significance of sixty-seven Texas churches, most of them more than a century old.

Each church gets a two-page spread, with a watercolor painting by Carl Christensen on one page and an accompanying page of text by Pixie. The churches range from elegant Gothic structures to tiny, even abandoned frame buildings, from urban centers to small towns and rural hamlets. Most of the churches still have active congregations worshipping there. Some have withstood hurricanes and tornadoes; others have had to be rebuilt several times.

The Christensens, who will be featured at the West Texas Book Festival in Abilene in September, note in their introduction that the book “does not pretend to be a comprehensive view of Texas history through its churches,” nor does it represent all architectural styles. But it does offer insights into the rich cultural diversity represented in Texas — from Spanish influence to German, Polish, and Czech immigrants to freed slaves.

Lone Star Steeples is the size book often referred to as a coffee-table book, and it will no doubt grace many coffee tables across the state, inviting readers to pick it up and learn something about history, architecture, traditions, perseverance, and faith in Texas. The book divides the churches into seven regions, with maps pointing out their locations. West Texas and South Texas are not as well represented as the other areas of the state, perhaps suggesting opportunities for the Christensens, or others, to offer a follow-up volume.

“We hope this book,” the authors write, “inspires others to cherish their heritage and tell their stories.” Amen to that.

Mike Leach quotes: Here’s a book title that jumps off the page — Squib-Kick It to a Fat Guy by Texas author and quotation-collector Alan Burton. The subtitle tells what it’s about: “…and 699 more memorable quotes from the playbook of Coach Mike Leach” (Anarene Press, $15.95 paperback).

Leach, now the head football coach at Washington State, became known for his one-liners during his colorful and controversial tenure at Texas Tech.
