The 512-page book is thorough, fun to read, and richly illustrated with hundreds of color photos.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u201119-25\">Clark said he set out to write the book as \u201ca personal account of Texas birds,\u201d with the first draft being basically off the top of his head. (Technical corrections and additions based on source material would come later.) And that\u2019s how it reads, written informally and conversationally, like a friend telling another friend about the interesting birds he has observed, with a color picture of each one.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u201119-28\">A few examples:<\/p>\n<ul id=\"u201119-39\">\n<li id=\"u201119-30\">\u00a0\u201cMountain bluebirds always look to me as if they were born from some sky god because of their unmatchable sky-blue color.\u201d<\/li>\n<li id=\"u201119-32\">\u00a0\u201cAs a college professor, I\u2019m rather partial to the ovenbird because the male\u2019s song resembles the words teacher-teacher-teacher.\u201d<\/li>\n<li id=\"u201119-34\">\u00a0\u201cI brake for red-headed woodpeckers. I don\u2019t see them as often as I did when I was a boy, so I brake to make sure I get a good look at these uncommon birds with uncommonly handsome plumage.\u201d<\/li>\n<li id=\"u201119-36\">\u00a0\u201cLet\u2019s say you wanted to watch parrots in the wild instead of parrots in a cage. Where would you go? Mexico? No, you\u2019d never have to leave Texas.\u201d<\/li>\n<li id=\"u201119-38\">\u00a0\u201cI doubt any human singer can match a mockingbird\u2019s vocal endurance or its repertoire of songs.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"u201119-44\">In addition to a one-page or so personal essay on each species, Clark provides factual details about what it eats, how it sounds, and where it can be found in Texas. <span id=\"u201119-42\">Book of Texas Birds<\/span> should be especially interesting to serious birders, but even the most casual observer of birds will find much to enjoy in the Clarks\u2019s delightful volume.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u201119-51\"><span><span id=\"u203402\"><a href=\"mailto:\/\/AuntLindaCooks@gmail.com\" id=\"u203394\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"readableLinkWithLargeImage\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"readableLargeImageContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/description\/ponder%2c%20lovin%20oven_cover%20sm.jpg\"  id=\"u203394_img\" \/><\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/span><\/span><span>Chocolate gravy: <\/span>Have you ever had chocolate gravy? I\u2019ve never heard of it, or hadn\u2019t until I perused a cookbook by <span>Linda Ponder<\/span> of Bryan, formerly of Ballinger.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u201119-56\">\u201cI\u2019ve never met another person outside our family who eats chocolate gravy,\u201d Ponder writes in <span>Aunt Linda\u2019s Lovin\u2019 Oven.<\/span> \u201cIt is a breakfast dish, made in the cast iron skillet and served spooned over leftover hot rolls, biscuits or toast or just plain white bread.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"u201119-63\">Ponder includes that recipe with other favorites such as ham and sweet potato breakfast pie, Italian chicken salad, old-fashioned beef stew, and Nanny\u2019s skillet cookies.
