The Liz Carpenter Award is presented annually at the Women\u2019s History Lunch at the TSHA\u2019s annual meeting.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u223103-21\">Coedited by <span>Deborah M. Liles<\/span> and <span>Angela Boswell,<\/span> <span>Women in Civil War Texas: Diversity and Dissidence in the Trans-Mississippi<\/span> (University of North Texas Press) is the first book dedicated to the unique experiences of Texas women during this time. It connects Texas women\u2019s lives to southern women\u2019s history and shares the diversity of experiences of women in Texas during the Civil War.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u223103-24\">Contributors explore Texas women and their vocal support for secession, coping with their husbands\u2019 wartime absences, the importance of letter-writing, and how pro-Union sentiment caused serious difficulties for women. They also analyze the effects of ethnicity, focusing on African American, German, and Tejana women\u2019s experiences. Finally, two essays examine the problem of refugee women in East Texas and the dangers facing western frontier women.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u223103-31\">\u201c<span id=\"u223103-27\">Women in Civil War Texas<\/span> is a very interesting read full of a variety of fascinating stories from different perspectives,\u201d said Jessica Brannon-Wranosky, associate professor at Texas A&#038;M University-Commerce and Project Director for the <span>Handbook of Texas Women<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u223103-39\"><span>Deborah M. Liles<\/span> teaches history at the University of North Texas and is the author of Will Rogers Coliseum and several journal articles. <span>Angela Boswell <\/span>is professor of history at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and the author of<span> Her Act and Deed: Women\u2019s Lives in a Rural Southern County, 1837- 1873,<\/span> which also won the TSHA Liz Carpenter Award in 2001.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u223103-44\">(<span id=\"u223103-42\">From organization\u2019s press release<\/span>)<\/p>\n<p id=\"u223103-47\">* * * * *<\/p>\n<div id=\"u223096-54\">\n<h1 id=\"u223096-5\">Writers\u2019 League Celebrates \u201cTexas Independents\u201d statewide throughout March 2017; next stop, The Twig, San Antonio, March 6<\/h1>\n<p id=\"u223096-9\"><span>In March 2017 the Writers&#8217; League of Texas will partner with some of the state&#8217;s greatest Independents<\/span>\u2014in conjunction with Texas Independence Day\u2014to host a series of free and open events throughout the month of March in communities across the state.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u223096-12\">These panel discussions (featuring authors and experts and including time for questions and networking) will focus on the great opportunities that Texas has to offer, from independent presses, to journals, to bookstores, and beyond, while also answering writers&#8217; burning questions about the publishing process, submitting to agents, catching the eye of an editor, and more.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u223096-25\"><span id=\"u223096-14\"><span id=\"u225378\"><span id=\"u225370\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"readableLargeImageContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/description\/wlt%20texas%20independents%20odessa%20college%20feb%202017%2017906.jpg\"  id=\"u225370_img\" \/><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/span><span id=\"u223096-15\">\u201cCelebrating Texas Independents: Our Great Literary State&#8217;s Independent Presses, Journals, Bookstores &#038; More\u201d<\/span> launched March 2 at Odessa College in Odessa, moderated by WLT executive director Becka Oliver and featuring panelists <span id=\"u223096-18\">Will Evans,<\/span> founder and president of Deep Vellum Books and Cinestate; <span id=\"u223096-20\">Kay Ellington, <\/span>publisher of Lone Star Literary Life; and <span id=\"u223096-22\">Mark Johnson,<\/span> editor of the <span id=\"u223096-24\">Concho River Review.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"u223096-43\">The panel discussion in San Antonio will be held at The Twig Book Shop Mon., March 6 at 6 pm, featuring distinguished panelists including <span id=\"u223096-28\">Kelly Grey Carlisle, <\/span>editor of the creative nonfiction journal ; <span id=\"u223096-32\">Bryce Milligan, <\/span>owner of Wings Press; and <span id=\"u223096-34\">Tom Payton,<\/span> director at Trinity University Press.
