His first book, <span>Barefoot Dogs; Stories,<\/span> was published this month by Simon &#038; Schuster and was selected as the Amazon Best Book of the Month for March 2015. Lone Star Literary Life caught up with him by email to talk with him about the writing life.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14514-28\">LONE STAR LISTENS: Antonio, according to your author bio, you\u2019ve worked in every imaginable position in a newsroom. Can you tell us what those positions have been and in which newspapers and cities?<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14514-42\">ANTONIO RUIZ-CAMACHO: The list is long, but I&#8217;ll name a few. I started as a copy editor at <span id=\"u14514-31\">Reforma<\/span> in Mexico City\u2013one of the most important newspapers in my home country. At <span id=\"u14514-33\">Reforma<\/span> I also worked as a reporter in the Arts &#038; Culture desk. I didn&#8217;t have a designated beat; I was what we&#8217;d call the <span id=\"u14514-35\">firefighter reporter,<\/span> covering all kinds of stories and breaking news other more-seasoned reporters didn&#8217;t have the time to. I once had to cover a real fire\u2014one that had destroyed an alternative theater in downtown Mexico City. Another time I was sent, completely out of the blue, to a publishers&#8217; conference with the mission of chasing down Mexican literary giant <span>Carlos Fuentes<\/span> and getting his reaction on a topic that was, apparently, very important at the time, and which I can no longer recall.\u00a0 <span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lonestarliterary.com\/antonio-ruiz-camacho-032915.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>&gt;&gt; read more<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"pu14531-120\">\n<div id=\"u14531-120\">\n<h1 id=\"u14531-5\">San Antonio Book Festival, April 11, reflects topics of national trends, including immigration, effects of war, and climate change<\/h1>\n<p id=\"u14531-10\"><span><span id=\"u14541\"><span id=\"u14542\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"166\" height=\"166\" src=\"https:\/\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/description\/logo_sanantoniobookfestival_sm.jpg\"  id=\"u14542_img\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><span>The San Antonio Book Festival <\/span>will feature more than 75 acclaimed national, regional, and local authors Sat., April 11, 2015. In its third year, SABF is a free, day-long, family-friendly event that draws thousands to the Central Library and the Southwest School of Art for readings, panel discussions, book sales, recipe demonstrations, children\u2019s and teen activities, food, and live music.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14531-24\">Headliners this year include Pulitzer Prize winner <span>Lawrence Wright<\/span> with his latest book, <span>Thirteen Days in September: Carter, Begin and Sadat at Camp David<\/span>, and <span>S. C. Gwynne<\/span> with <span>Rebel Yell: The Violence, Passion, and Redemption of Stonewall Jackson.<\/span> <span>Andrew Yang,<\/span> founder and CEO of Venture for America, a nonprofit organization that places top college graduates in startups to encourage job growth and a new generation of entrepreneurs, will present his book, <span>Smart People Should Build Things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"u14531-27\">Several important themes and trends have emerged for this year\u2019s Festival, according to SABF Literary Director Clay Smith, and will be topics for panels such as immigration issues, the effects of war, climate change and motherhood.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14531-54\"><span id=\"u14531-29\">\u201cWe are particularly strong in fiction writing,\u201d Smith said. \u201cGreat examples are the award-winning authors <\/span><span id=\"u14531-30\">Kirstin Valdez Quade<\/span><span id=\"u14531-32\">Nights at the Fiesta: Stories<\/span><span id=\"u14531-33\">), who received a &#8220;5 Under 35&#8221; award from the National Book Foundation, and <\/span><span id=\"u14531-34\">Maggie Shipstead<\/span><span id=\"u14531-36\">Astonish Me<\/span><span id=\"u14531-37\">), who won the Dylan Thomas Prize and the L.A. Hass\u2019s work is rooted in the landscapes of his native Northern California. Widely read and much honored, he has brought the kind of energy in his poetry to his work as an essayist, translator, and activist on behalf of poetry, literacy, and the environment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14531-67\">Hass was selected for the MacArthur \u201cGenius\u201d Fellowship, twice honored with the National Book Critics\u2019 Circle Award, named winner of\u00a0 2014 Wallace Stevens Award, and in 1973 selected for the Yale Series of Younger Poets in 1973.\u00a0 He is professor of English at UC Berkeley.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14531-70\">\u00a0General admission is $18, Tickets are available from Select-A-Seat at ( 806) 770-2000. Written by retired teacher <span>Mike Kearby<\/span> and illustrated by <span>Mack White,<\/span> the graphic novel is reminiscent of the old classic comic books. It\u2019s serious history in a very readable format, aimed at seventh graders studying Texas history.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14461-28\">The book packs a lot of information into its 28 pages, covering such topics as vaqueros, chuck wagons, trail drive jobs, rustlers, stampedes and blizzards. Maps trace the routes of three famous Texas cattle trails.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14461-31\">The first book in the Texas Tales Illustrated Series came out nearly four years ago and told about the Texas Revolution.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14461-40\"><span id=\"u14461-33\"><span id=\"u14468\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tamupress.com\/product\/Constant-State-of-Leaping,7975.aspx\" id=\"u14469\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"readableLinkWithMediumImage\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"220\" src=\"https:\/\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/sites\/lonestarliterary.etypegoogle10.com\/files\/description\/morton%2c%20constant%20state%20of%20leaping_cover.jpg\"  id=\"u14469_img\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><span id=\"u14461-34\">Poet: <\/span>Denton poet, speaker, author, photographer, and storyteller <span>Karla Morton<\/span> was Texas Poet Laureate in 2010. Her new collection of poems \u2013 her tenth &#8212; is <span>Constant State of Leaping,<\/span> consisting of about eighty poems covering a wide range of topics and interests, including the game of \u201c42\u201d (Texas Review Press, $8.95 paperback).<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14461-43\">I liked one titled \u201cYou Don\u2019t Know Hot,\u201d which begins \u201cuntil you\u2019ve seen August in Texas.\u201d Another poem is basically a toast raised in tribute to Ben Franklin, while another explains \u201cWhy I Married My Husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14461-46\">The funniest piece \u2013and shortest \u2013 is \u201cTequila Poetry Form (2-2-4-3)\u201d which contains just two syllables in the first line, two in the second, etc. Here it is:<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14461-48\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 i think<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14461-50\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 maybe<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14461-52\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 i just might be<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14461-54\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 hung-over<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14461-61\">Gunslingers: <span>Bill O\u2019Neal<\/span> of Carthage is in the second year of his two-year term as the state historian of Texas. He travels around the state and talks about, well, Texas history. He is the author of more than 40 books, including his latest from Aracadia Publishing, a pictorial history of <span>Texas Gunslingers<\/span> ($21.99 paperback). It\u2019s a good, easy read, filled with dozens of old photos of famous and not-so-famous gunslingers, supplemented with tightly-written text telling their stories.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14461-64\">One chapter focuses on what O\u2019Neal calls \u201cThe Deadliest Trio\u201d \u2013 Ben Thompson, John Wesley Hardin, and James B. \u201cKillin\u2019 Jim\u201d Miller. \u201cAll three members of this deadly trio died violently,\u201d O\u2019Neal writes. Miller was lynched, Hardin was shot dead in El Paso, and Thompson was assassinated. All registered poets attend free.\u00a0 Tickets are available to the public for $20-60 each.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14522-15\">Now in its 23rd year, the festival is an international non-juried event that is distinctively Austin. Unlike many poetry events, the AIP welcomes any registered poet to perform at AIPF, an approach that has fostered participation from a diverse audience and an array of poets from around the globe.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u14522-18\">Giovanni will take the stage on April 11 to read a selection of poems, and speak about art and diversity.
