Texas Book Festival reveals the first 12 authors for 2017 festival weekend<\/h1>\n

Festival to showcase acclaimed authors Claire Messud, Mark Bittman, and Angie Thomas<\/h1>\n

AUSTIN \u2014 The Texas Book Festival announced the first twelve authors in the lineup for the 2017 Texas Book Festival Weekend, Fri\u00ac\u2013Sat., Nov. 4\u20135, including artist, illustrator, and Caldecott Medal honoree Javaka Steptoe, <\/span>bestselling young adult novelist Angie Thomas,<\/span> and Top Chef<\/span> judge Gail Simmons.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEach year, we try to surpass what we\u2019ve done before to engage and delight book lovers from all corners of the state who come to the annual Texas Book Festival to see their favorite authors and to discover new ones,\u201d says Lois Kim, Festival executive director.<\/p>\n

Following the success of the record-breaking Festival last year, the first round of 2017 Festival authors includes acclaimed young adult novelists, food and cookbook writers, illustrators, and bestselling authors. The roster includes the following:<\/p>\n

Claire Messud<\/span> will present her latest novel, The Burning Girl,<\/span> which is already one of the most anticipated books of 2017. A bracing, hypnotic coming-of-age story about the bond of best friends, The Burning Girl<\/span> is sure to follow the success of The Emperor\u2019s Children<\/span> and The Woman Upstairs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Angie Thomas<\/span> will present her debut novel, The Hate U Give,<\/span> which launched at the top of the New York Times<\/span> Young Adult bestseller list. The searing novel has received starred reviews from eight literary journals \u2014 one of the highest amounts ever garnered by a young adult novel \u2014 and is about an ordinary girl in extraordinary circumstances who addresses issues of racism and police violence with intelligence, heart, and unflinching honesty.<\/p>\n

Margarita Engle,<\/span> the national 2017\u201319 Young People\u2019s Poet Laureate, Newbery Honor winner, and PEN USA Award winner, will present two new books at the Festival: Forest World<\/span> and All the Way to Havana.<\/span> Forest World<\/span> is a lively middle grade novel in verse, and All the Way to Havana<\/span> offers \u201ca child’s view of Cuba that is extremely accessible and as striking as it is unforgettable. A vibrant snapshot of modern Cuba, full of rich, sensory detail\u201d (Kirkus Reviews,<\/span> starred review).<\/p>\n

Lisa Ko<\/span> will present her highly acclaimed novel The Leavers,<\/span> a vivid and moving examination of borders and belonging, which won the 2016 PEN\/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction.<\/p>\n

Mark Bittman,<\/span> the celebrated author of twenty acclaimed and bestselling cookbooks and former New York Times<\/span> food-focused op-ed columnist, will discuss the forthcoming tenth anniversary edition of his bestselling cookbook, How to Cook Everything Vegetarian.<\/span> Top Chef<\/span> judge and beloved figure in the food world Gail Simmons<\/span> will present her new cookbook, Bringing It Home: Favorite Recipes from a Life of Adventurous Eating,<\/span> in which she shares her best recipes and food experiences.<\/p>\n

Young readers will be able to meet Javaka Steptoe,<\/span> a Caldecott and Coretta Scott King Illustrator award-winning artist, designer, and illustrator, present his stunning new picture book which won the 2017 Caldecott Medal, Radiant Child.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the above authors, the 2017 TBF lineup will feature 250 celebrated and emerging writers, including journalists, artists, scientists, and more.<\/p>\n

The 2017 Texas Book Festival poster was created by artist Joel Salcido,<\/span> an Austin-based photographer and author of the new book The Spirit of Tequila.<\/span> His stunning image of a pitayo cactus at sunset evokes the sense of possibility and awe that draws us west and south to the limitless vistas of Texas and beyond. The Spirit of Tequila<\/span> includes nearly ninety photographs that reveal not only the tequila-making process but also the culture and traditions of the region where it\u2019s made.<\/p>\n

The Festival Weekend includes acclaimed authors at readings, panel discussions, and signings; exhibitor booths and food vendors; tents and venues, including cooking, C-SPAN, children\u2019s entertainment, and live music performances.<\/p>\n

2017 Top ELEVEN Readers\u2019 Favorite Texas Bookstores<\/h1>\n

Texas readers have spoken. <\/span>Nearly 2,500 of Lone Star Literary Life\u2019s readers have cast ballots in 3 rounds of our statewide contest during May 2017 to recognize Texas\u2019s favorite bookstores. Their final selections are as diverse as the state itself, and honorees include big indies, small indies, chain stores, used bookstores, and new bookstores in every corner of the state. And in the process, we were pleased to learn about places to buy books that we hadn\u2019t even known before.<\/p>\n

From the major cities of Dallas and Houston, to our state\u2019s capitol city, from the historic Hill Country to the Piney Woods of East Texas, from the burbs to the beach, Texas bookshops are connecting with their communities. Texas Center for the Book seeks applicants for 2017 Literacy Award<\/h1>\n

Austin \u2014 The Texas Center for the Book is seeking nonprofit organizations<\/span> that have made outstanding contributions to increasing literacy in Texas. Qualifying organizations must be nominated by September 1, 2017.<\/p>\n

The winning organization will receive a $1,000 cash award to assist in its future work promoting reading and combating illiteracy. This year as well, an honorable mention recipient will receive an $500 cash award. These awards provide public recognition to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations committed to addressing the continuing need for literacy services and that increase public awareness of the importance of literacy. The 2017 Literacy Award winner will be announced during the 2nd Annual Texas Author Summit at the Texas Book Festival on Nov. 2, 2017.<\/p>\n

Nonprofit organizations whose primary purpose is to support and encourage literacy are eligible for the 2017 Literacy Award. Organizations may self-nominate for the award, or nominate partner nonprofit organizations. While this award promotes partnerships with libraries, please note that library friends organizations, public, school and academic libraries or other library entities are not eligible for nomination. These entities are highly encouraged to nominate literacy organizations within their local and\/or regional communities.<\/p>\n

Nomination forms must include one letter of reference and a statement of 500 words or less on the nominated program\u2019s value and impact. Nominators are strongly encouraged to include examples of the nominated organization’s partnerships with libraries.<\/p>\n

Nominated organizations are encouraged, but not required, to produce a two-minute video that highlights the impact of the nominated programming.<\/p>\n

The winning organization must provide documentation proving 501(c)(3) status. Inspired by the Library of Congress Literacy Awards, funding is made possible by The Friends of the Libraries and Archives of Texas.<\/p>\n
